How to Update! July 2019 Firmware Updates LUMIX S & G Series

Photo Moment - July 11, 2019

Panasonic has released firmware updates 1.2 for the LUMIX S1 and S1R, firmware 2.5 for the LUMIX GH5, and firmware 1.3 for the LUMIX GH5S, G9G80/G81/G85G90/G91/G95 and the GX9. The video above walks you through the update procedure, which is also outlined below!

Download your Firmware Updates here

Firmware Update Procedure

  1. Ensure your batteries are at least 50% full for the S Series, and full for all other cameras
  2. Format an SD memory card in your camera, then turn off the camera
  3. Remove the SD card from the camera, and insert it into your computer
  4. Visit this Panasonic page in any web browser
    1. Click the Downloads button in the of buttons near the top of the page
    2. Select the appropriate tab for your camera (Full-frame System Camera or Micro Four Thirds System Camera)
    3. Locate your camera model in the list, and click the Click to the download page link. This will open a new window. If a window does not open, you may have pop-ups disabled. Change that in your browser settings.
    4. Click the Download button in the pop-up window
  5. Locate the downloaded .zip file, and double-click it to expand to a .bin file
  6. Copy the .bin file to the root level of your camera's SD card. Just drag it to the icon; don't put it inside a folder/directory in the SD card.
  7. Remove the SD card from your computer, and re-insert it into your camera
  8. Turn on the camera
  9. Continue below depending on your camera model

Continued Update Procedure for LUMIX S1 and S1R

  1. Press the menu button
  2. Navigate to Setup menu (wrench) > IN/OUT menu (box with radio waves on it) > Bluetooth, and if Bluetooth is on, turn it off. \
  3. Navigate to Setup menu (wrench) > Others (wrench with three dots underneath it) > Firmware Version > Firmware Update
    • TROUBLESHOOTING — If the Firmware Update menu is not available, the camera does not see the file on the card.
      • Try reformatting the card, and copying the .bin file again
      • Ensure you downloaded the correct .bin file (i.e. the S1, not the S1R update, for the S1 camera)
      • Ensure you disabled bluetooth
      • Return to the download page, and locate the button “Click here to the procedure for update”. Read the painfully precise instructions carefully; look for anything you may have missed. If that still doesn't work… contact Panasonic.
  4. It will confirm the version that it will update to; select Yes to start the update. The update will take several minutes (it took mine about 3m45s)
  5. The camera will automatically reboot when it's done. If you want, verify that the update was successful by going back to the Firmware Version menu and verifying the new version is there.
  6. If you disabled Bluetooth, don't forget to re-enable it

Continued Update Procedure for LUMIX G Series and Others

  1. Press the Play button
  2. The Version Up menu will appear; select Yes to update.
    • TROUBLESHOOTING — If the Version Up page does not appear, the camera does not see the file on the card.
      • Try reformatting the card, and copying the .bin file again
      • Ensure you downloaded the correct .bin file (i.e. the GH5, not the GH5S update, for the GH5 camera)
      • Return to the download page, and locate the button “Click here to the procedure for update”. Read the painfully precise instructions carefully; look for anything you may have missed. If that still doesn't work… contact Panasonic.
  3. The camera will automatically reboot when it's done. If you want, verify that the update was successful by going to the Setup menu (wrench) > Version Display and verifying the new version is there.

The update procedure is a little different than before, so I thought I'd make this video for you. Are you excited for the S1 Filmmakers Update coming next?! Also, get the firmware updates here https://photojoseph.com/July2019LUMIXfirmwareUpdates
OMG!! what is "THE ROOT LEVEL!" you have to show where this stuff is for people who don't know what "THE ROOT LEVEL IS!" 🤦‍♂I find this kind of lack of clear teaching, everywhere on You Tube and it's so frustrating. I'm going to have to come back here once I figure it out, and post it so that people don't feel as frustrated as I do right now.
@ChrisTopheRaz you’ll see in later videos, I’m more clear https://youtu.be/N-cQEH5UkY8?si=H2zdQ6ZYKQqkuPim
@@photojoseph thank you, I did figure that out, but I think people don’t understand that the people that come to watch these videos are newbies to a degree, not everybody knows that terminology so you have to describe it. Missing one single detail can throw somebody completely off and leave them confused about what to do. Especially if that detail is exactly what they were looking for.
The top level. Not in any folders. Fair enough; I guess that’s not common knowledge. I think I later videos I make that more clear.
Amazing Amazing Amazing - Thank You Sooooooooo Much - I have the gh5m2 and 12-35 F/2.8 35-100 F/2.8 and needed to update lens firmware, been at it all day. Nowhere else has anyone mentioned that I had to. have Bluetooth turned off. I cannot thank you enough...
Joseph, I am having some issues like nobodies business right now.
I have Two S1 cameras I have now upgrade the versions on both cameras and yet I don't have the 5 menu pages I see you and most on YouTube and even Panasonic are using to have access to the various controls and options. I don't have my .mov file format only AVCHD MP4 and MP4 HEVC. I cannot customize my cameras without and contacting Panasonic USA is crazy HELP PlEASE
you saved me a bunch of time thank you! best video ive found!
Awesome!
Any idea why bluetooth has to be turned off? Mine was already off but firmware update was greyed out until I turned bluetooth on and then off again. So odd.
Weird! No, it’s never been clear to my why that has to be off.
Question of the day. My brother and i both got a GH5 handed down to us. The bad news is that both of them would not save a picture and only save 1 second of video even if it showed 10 minutes was recorded. The firware was 1.0 on both of the cameras. So we googled around and found a shop in cali that said it was a sensor. So we sent it there. After a week they said it was the motherboard and wanted to charge $800. My brother is in 8th grade and i am now a freshman so we couldn't do that. They sent the camera back, and the firmware was updated to 2.2 and the camera worked. It sometimes shuts off for no reason, but I upgraded it then to 2.6 and so far so good. Now I am trying to help my brother update the firmware on his. Am I missing something. Firmware version 1, full battery, SD card formatted in camera, a couple pics on it from the other camera, when I press play, it just plays the pics, it doesn't see the upgrade. i called the camera repair place and asked what they did, and they wouldn't tell me because I didn't get the motherboard replaced (which obviously didn't need to be). Any suggestions?
@@photojoseph thank you for the reply. I watched your complete video, which is great btw. I did everything in the video but still nothing. Anything else you can think of?
You should reformat the card before copying the update file to it, as described in this video. Reformatting the card first is very important. Good luck!
@@AttorneyRyanAlexander No it doesn't.
Does it have V-log installed?
Can i ask?is this firmware update include the V Log for free? Cause i want to buy lumix S1 but confused about this V Log.. it's purchase or free. Thank you!
It was free for a limited time but now it’s a purchase, but check with your dealer to be sure.
Bluetooth tip saved me from stressing out! Best!
👍🏻😁
Most helpful video on youtube, thank you!
haha, thanks! Hope you subbed; I got a lot more coming ;-)
Hey Joseph, does one have to update all the previous updates if the camera is new and at 1.0 to 1.1 then 1.2... or does the newest GH5 update, which is 2.6 have all the previous improvements within the update?
Every update always has all previous updates built into it
Hi, so I just got a Panasonic S1 and I did the firmware update, and tried to do the lens update for the 24-105mm lens as well. But I am not able to get the camera to notice the folder for the lens update. Can you point me into the right direction on how to get this to work. Thanks
You have to be in Creative Movie Mode (movie camera mode). The in the VIDEO menu, MONITOR / DISPLAY > Waveform Monitor
@@photojoseph one more thing, I can’t locate the waveform monitor. I see the histogram but for video I need a waveform. Do you know why it’s not available? Thanks again.
😊
@@photojoseph Thanks I got it. Had it in the folder!!! Needed to be at the root level..
The fact you said "folder" concerns me; the update file belongs on the root level of the SD card, not in a folder. Format the card first, and make sure that you're only putting one update file on at a time.
Wow thank you, you are the first person who told me to turn off bluetooth to be able to update. It´s not on the Panasonic website or on any other website....
Great tutorial!
Sweet!
I can't update Lumix S1, I do everything you say in the movie, my camera can't see the software, what can I do?
This usually means that you are missing a step. Please try again and be sure you’re following every step exactly.
My slot 1 on GH5 is not working. Can I update from slot 2?
I tried but it says NO VALID PICTURE even though i followed all the right steps till then.
Any solution? Anyone...?
You have to use slot 1. I’ve heard this from a few people; what happened to slot 1?
How do you update the DC-ZS70. Ive been having trouble updating and setting up the camera to take amazing pictures like I know it can
@@photojoseph I've been following the instructions you put out and on the page but it won't work for me 🤷🏻‍♀️
I haven’t tried that camera but I’d assume it to be the same process as the others. Read the instructions page if that isn’t working.
Have the GH5S. Last week reset my settings. Now I need to update to V1.4. The camera is on V1.2 for body and lens. The camera is not reading the bin file. Did all the necessary steps. Format, battery is full, tried on 2 different cards. Nothing. Next step calling panasonic. any clues?? would greatly appreciated.
Are you sure you were in slot 1? I actually neglected to say that in the video. However, one user said it only worked in slot 2, although I'm not sure I believe it.
hey guys just updated my gh 5 to the latest 2.6 but realized after I forgot about the prior 2.5 update is it included in 2.6
Right, every update also included the previous updates. No need to step up one at a time.
Hi
@PhotoJoseph I did what you said but when I clicked the zip file this comes out. Unable to expand GH5s V13 bin. It is and unsupported format. I use OS Mac. Hope you can help me. Thanks for your videos
PhotoJoseph I hoy it.. I was trying to unzip the bin but I got it figured it . Thanks for the fast reply
All I can say is to watch the video again and follow every step exactly. Every time it doesn’t work for someone it’s because they are missing a step.
Hi Joseph! I had a problem updating my GH5s. When I press play the interface shows there is no valid image to display. So it doesn't recognize the file. I didn't get the 1.2 update so i am skipin it from 1.1 to 1.3. May this be a problem? I tried to look for the 1.2 but I can's find it. If I skip that update, are the features it included included on the 1.3 update? I would really apreciate your help.
Did you extract the file from a zip? That was the reason it wasnt working for me. it has to be .bin file not a a zip like i was trying before
I am having the same problem and I am on version 1.2 trying to update to 1.3.
Хотя и на анлгийском,но объяснил хорошо.Я теперь знаю как обновить свой S1.
Спасибо.
hi joseph!
.. i know it´s off topic here, but maybe u would answer me. what are the differences with the letters GH5-LEB, MEB, LEC, MEG-K ..... aso.? unfortunately i can´t find that anywhere and need to know for purchse; many thx in advance & greetings from austria.
@@photojoseph ok, thx a lot. so no troubles with different specs (except lenses of course), as i suppose - fine.
(ordered a GH5 now in the UK for ~ € 1.500,- with the 12-60 leica to austria - that´s DC-GH5LEB-K. forget about the nikon Z50)
Anything after the cameras model is either regional (for sale in Europe, North America, etc.) or bundles (what lens it comes with).
dude I've done this at least a dozen times with my Gh5 as well as the rental Gh5 I have and it doesn't work on either one. I don't know what I'm doing wrong! I'm tried in all kinds of modes and even turning bluetooth off. Nothing works!
Andres Ortiz you’ve re-downloaded the file? Made sure it’s the right format (not uncompressed I think… I forget now; watch the video)… copied the file to the root level of the SD card?
it's finally working. Your link worked better than the one I found directly off the Panasonic website. I don't know why. @@photojoseph
@@photojoseph yep! keep in mind everything I've tried I've actually done on two cameras.
Using slot #1?
Thanks Joseph!! Easy thanks to you!
Sweet!
i updated based on the procedure shown here - i cannot find the new features AF ON - Near/Far? Can you kindly guide me please - thank you
great!
thanks a mil got it!
You have to assign it to a custom function button. That appears to be the only place it’s listed.
Hey Joseph, Just updated the firmware on my GH5 body to 2.3 . but my lens firmware is on version 1.0 - i have the Lumix G 12-35mm and 35-100mm ~ Are we suppose to also download the Lens update? the page for lens software is a bit confusing ... Would you please be so kind and patient to explain the update for the lenses? thank you ( Please speak to me like a 6th grader ) I am in slo mo...
You’re welcome! It’s such a tiny number; I’m glad you could find it.
thank you - used a magnifying glass to see the number & it wasnt on the panasonic list - So I'm assuming now Its all good.. camera GH5 has been updated... Thank you for this. much appreciated.
The process is the same for doing a lens. Exactly the same. If you don’t see an update listed for your lens, then one isn’t available. Also there have been two editions of those lenses. If yours are gunmetal grey/blue, that’s the original and I’m 99% sure there are updates available. If they are black then they are the new ones and I don’t think those have been updated. Check the part number on the lens; it’s engraved near the lens mount. Have lots of light and perhaps magnifying glass. They’re frustratingly hard to see.
Hi Joseph, could you demonstrate how to use the new "shift near" and "shit far" AF on the S1?
Great info...thank you. Is an S1/S1R hardware or firmware pending to change the type of card in the XQD slot? This was mentioned a few times, but I don't recall the sources...perhaps wishful thinking?
Not yet
Good Afternoon,

After i downloaded the Firmware Version on my camera (Ver 1.2) the settings were not functioning or even coming up on the displays. V log photo style and other features are not popping up when i go through the camera settings.

Please advise.

-Sean
End of the month; that’s all that’s made public. No actual date. Of course it’s over half way through the month, so no more than a couple of weeks.
PhotoJoseph thank you, I was worried something was wrong with camera or firmware. Everyone is advertising that it’s the V log update. Do you have any idea of the actual release date?
That's because this wasn't the V-Log update. That comes later this month.
My Panasonic dealership said they have received no information from Pana regarding upgrading current S1 owners with the VLOG upgrade for free. Any word on when Panasonic is going to send out the codes to the dealers?
End-ish of the month is all I know, but I’m hoping to get the full scoop this week and release a video about it.
I have follow all the steps but am not getting the vlog or 10bits MOV option, Anything am doing wrong????
It’s development time. These features weren’t ready to release when the camera shipped, just like with the GH5. And while I don’t know for certain, I’d imagine the release schedule of releasing the software but not the key to unlock it has to do wtih a final stage of testing.
@@photojoseph Thanks boss, just found this out. but it's a bit unfair to have to wait 28days to get this, would have been nice to just include it in the original purchase of the camera, or within the update, like they did for the GH5s.
Yeah… looking for them ;-) This update doesn’t add that. The key to unlock those features comes later this month. Remember it is a paid upgrade but current owners will get it for free. I’ll have another video explaining how to get and install that very soon.
So will this update my s1 to give the added video features you talked of on your previous videos? My local store where I purchased to camera said they charge for the update.
No… this update adds the ability to add the Filmmakers V-Log upgrade, coming soon. You will need to have this update installed to be able to add the Filmmaker upgrade.

Your store is wrong. All S1 owners quality for the upgrade, regardless of when they bought it. Your store may simply not realize that, but please tell them to ask their Panasonic SSR (Sales Support Rep). Every single dealer has one. Once the update is actually out there will, I'm sure, be an information blitz to all retail stores.

(by the way this applies to US only. I do not know what international is doing; even though I'm an international Ambassador, I work with the US team and am only privy to their deals)
What about the S1 update key? How do we use that to gain access to V-log and such.
In fact I have… I just published something on my website about it: https://photojoseph.com/SigmaLMount
PhotoJoseph awesome thank you. Yeah it took me a few minutes to figure out this update and then I didn't see anywhere to add the key once we receive them but that's good to know that it's in a later update.

Have you had a chance to see the new l mount lens's announced today? Specifically the 14-24 2.8 sigma? I'm excited to see if the performance is similar to the native glass.
That update comes around the end of July. This update is to prepare for that update. Weird, I know, but basically this update installed the ability to add the filmmaker update, among other minor enhancements. I'm quite sure that you will NEED to have this update installed before you can install the filmmaker V-log update coming soon.
No more love for the GX8 then. Ok, fine. I got fed up waiting for a newer version anyway, time for an E-M1ii
How about the G9 then?
@@photojoseph this is the first firmware update which doesn't include anything for the GX8, which I'm a little sad about. Signifies it's not 'current', and likely won't be getting any further firmware updates.

I got fed up waiting for a new high end GX model to replace the GX8, with Dual IS etc. The GX9 doesn't cut it as a GX8 replacement.
The GX8 is literally four years old. There is now a GX9, and probably a dozen other LUMIX cameras have been released since then. I really don't understand what you're fed up waiting for, or why you'd expect a midrange four year old camera to continue getting updates. Software updates require hardware that can support the features; most of the new features you see added to cameras like the S and G series were designed into the hardware from the beginning with planned updates (as they are flagship cameras, this is part of their release strategy to make hardware last longer, unlike what many manufacturers do which is plan obsolescence even into their most expensive cameras), or are new software discover/developments with existing modern hardware. A four year old camera really isn't the focus of ANY company.
The update (for the G9) seems to only be about using the new zoom and remote cable and possible headphone volume inconsistency. The new zoom is way out of my retirement price range, I don't use remote cable, and headphone volume is ok, so I'll pass unless there is a more compelling reason not listed.
Thanks for the tutorial!
True!
@@photojoseph for sure. The update can't hurt.
Yeah it’s a minor update. But consider this; if you ever got your hands on the lens even momentarily, you’d want to be able to try it out. Can’t hurt to update.
I am looking for a camera for video and photography as well, what type of camera you recommend?
Any LUMIX camera
Another great wee video from you Joseph. Very helpful links for the firmware. Oh my gosh, when are they releasing this Joseph?
GH5 Firmware Version 2.5, Improved compatibility with the Panasonic LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH.
That lens is very soon
Cool, my g80 got an update too! Thank you (i would never checked it out by myself).
So I’ve been searching for the process of obtaining the vlog update for free based on what was announced and since I have two S1’s- have not discovered it...what do I need to do?
Yeah part of the problem is that it’s not out yet. But this is silly; every single Panasonic dealer has a direct Panasonic rep they deal with. All they have to do is ask them.
PhotoJoseph oh & I thought it was out with v1.2. I’m confused with that
PhotoJoseph I appreciate the response. Unfortunately, BestBuy, where both were purchases, doesn’t have any info & I’ve spoken to the Geek Squad Elite, Store manager, tech support from calling that #, camera support, etc. So no luck so far. Next step will be to elevate the higher tiers. I would expect more guidance from Panasonic. Anyway, I appreciate your video- always good editing & production. Thanks anyway.
Talk to your dealer. It will come from them. And it’s not out yet, but you can still talk to them about it.
THANK YOU DEAR JOSEPH !!!
You’re welcome!
I wish you should do a video tutorial on S1 & S1R to help out guy like me who bought the camera and start to learn photography for my retirement. Thanks
Thanks JT. What Duc Tri Tran is asking for is a training like my GH5training.com course, I believe. Unfortunately those courses take a LOT of time to make and I don’t think I’d make my money back on it. Just not enough people asking for it. DTT, if you want to hire me directly to help you learn the camera I can, but otherwise you’re going to have to rely on my YouTube videos, sorry.
