Aperture has suddenly become VERY slow to open my library. Is the the “opening…” dialog for a little while, then a blank Aperture window for a while more, and then finally the photos in my library.
I have:
Repaired the library
Rebuilt the library
Deleted Aperture's preferences
I also moved a copy of the library to another computer where it opens quickly.
What else can I try?
My next step might have to be to reinstall the Aperture application.
Bob
Have you repaired permissions on your O.S. disc?
Yes, I’ve repaired permissions. That didn’t help, either.

How much Ram do you have? How much free space on your HDs do you have? What apps start at login? can you stop them from loading and test the speed. Does it run slow if you login on another account? Is it slow on a different Library? Ive got a 2009 MBP and its now slow… what age is yours? So many things… we need more info. Cheers dbm

It was plenty fast until a few days ago on the same hardware and software.
A new, empty, library opens quickly, as it should.
16GB RAM and lots of empty HD space.
Login on to another account is troublesome as a different user doesn’t have permission to access “my” library files.

Oops! Spoke too soon.
Even a newly created, empty, library opens very slowly.
I continue to be suspicious of the Aperture application itself and the need to re-install it.

Well Ram isnt your problem unless its not working. Any start up stuff like antivirus, or cleanly mac stuff. If you open Activity Monitor what other programs are eating ram.

with newer machines when you delete AP cache and Preference you should re-boot the machine befor trying AP again

No anti-virus, no clean up software is running. Nothing is eating RAM, Activity Monitor shows 9+GB free.

I’ve rebooted several times through all this.
But I haven’t deleted the Aperture cache. Where is that stored?

You say AP starts slow. Is it building previews? How big are your raw files or are you shooting jpgs?

Chec out the maintenance info in this site under FAQ, … home library, application support, Aperture

Try starting AP while holding the Shift key to allow Ap to open without building previews. does that help?

The shift key start did not help.
Aperture does not appear to be building previews. They are already all built, anyway.
RAW files or a mixture. The biggest ones are Nikon D3 files at around 12MB.

Opening Aperture from another user account and creating a new library, results in fast opening in the other account. Opening a new library from my account is slow.
What could be in my account that Aperture does not like? Maybe I need to delete any and all Aperture related files from my account’s Library folder?

If AP works better from another account I believe you need to delete or move to desk top the plist files in home lib..preferences then the folder item in home lib … containers …com.apple.Aperture and Home lib ..Application Support .. Aperture (keep folder on desktop). RE Boot the machine before trying AP. I might be missing something. see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

I see you repaired your OS permissions (disk Utilities) After using that you should use AP’s repair Lib permissions and repair Lib. So Im reliably told. Hold off on Rebuilding Lib.

OK, Aperture is finally loading like its old self. I deleted every trace of it and then re-installed fresh.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice!
