Hi Everyone,

I have recently moved all my personal projects out of my current aperture library and in to its own specific library, leaving just behind my paid for projects. So I now operate 2 Aperture Libraries, 1 Personal and 1 Work.

1st Q. Can I have 2 aperture icons on my dock bar with each one opening up a specific library? Instead of doing File >> Switch to Library ??

2nd Q. in iTunes I sync my photos from Aperture. Will there be a way to take some of my personal projects and some of my paid for projects from 2 different Libraries and have them sync to the iPad? I like to have some paid for work with me, should I ever need to show it to possible client.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris,

1st A. What you need is to add the icons of your two different libraries to the dock. They are documents so will live on the right side (or bottom) of the dock. When you double-click an Aperture library file (or single-click in the dock), Aperture will open and make that library the default. If a different library is already open in Aperture, I believe a dialog will ask you whether you want to switch to the new library or merge it. Obviously you’d want to switch.

2nd A. You can’t sync two different libraries to the iPad. What you can do is tell iTunes to sync to a folder instead. You’d need to manually create a special folder in the Finder and export images you want synced to the iPad to that folder. Then select that folder in the iTunes photos section instead of Aperture.

I haven’t actually ever done this so I don’t know if you can have subfolders in there that would look like separate albums on the iPad. Otherwise all your photos, personal and business would be together. Maybe someone will chime in or you can just give it a try to see what happens.

Chris,

To elaborate on response 2), I wrote an extensive article a while ago on this exact topic. Check it out here: “Unified Photo Syncing to iDevices & More”.

With iOS 6 we now have Shared Photo Streams, and I have some ideas on how to simplify this process even more, but I haven’t dug into it yet. That’ll be a future article.
