Lightroom Mobile Adds Full Size Export… assuming It *has* Full Size, of Course

Earlier this week, Adobe announced the Lightroom Mobile for iOS had been updated (to version 2.2) to include full resolution export. This is very exciting news, because as I'd reported earlier, prior to this version Lightroom Mobile only exported a 2048 pixel wide file, no matter how big of an image it started with.

Here are the release notes:

What's New in Version 2.2.0

  • New: Full resolution output. Now, export and share photos that were captured on your device or that you added to your device at full resolution.
  • Updated: 3D Touch support in the Camera Roll browser view. Quickly preview your image with Peek & Pop when browsing Camera Roll photos in the app.
  • Fixed: Issue that lead to a potential crash.
  • Improved: Various bugs and issues.

But I learned that there's a caveat. A caveat that if I'd had read the description more carefully, I would have realized on my own. You only get full resolution on images that you've captured or added to your device. This means photos shot on the device, or added via a the Apple SD Card Reader or wireless transfer. It does not include photos synced from Lightroom on the desktop. Because you see, Lightroom desktop syncs to the cloud using Smart Previews, and Smart Previews are only 2560 pixels on the long side.
