SURPRISE UNBOXING ► Panasonic Leica 50-200mm f/2.8–4

Photo Moment - June 28, 2018

What, oh what do we have here? A box arrived at the studio front door earlier from Panasonic. Inside was the Panasonic Leica 50-200mm f/2.8–4 lens (aaaand some foam). Now… what should I do with this first?

Nice Video as always ! Just two short questions: Do you think it can get to heavy for the GH5-mft mount when be carried around without a lense-rig-support for a long time ?
As I always thought of buying the lumix 35-100mm (for video) - but many reviews talk about micro-jitters - did you experience that ?
Thanks a lot.
Great job as always. I was just wondering what cameras you use for your vlogs and was it the G9 or the GH-5 you put the new lens on?
PhotoJoseph cheers for that 😊
Vlogs are GH5 and GH5S. Live show is a mix of Blackmagic studio cameras and GH4 cameras. The 50-200 was mounted on a G9.
New sub here, really enjoying the channel !!. What about a race track or even those mad high speed downhill mountain bikers
No tracks around here. Downhill bikes… hm that could be cool. I’ll talk to a friend who rides
Ohhhh Yeah... Looking forward to that lens!
Good range Can it replace the 35-100 (Sharpness figures)?
Given that it's a Leica lens, I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes. But I have not compared.
50-200 with 2x tele vs 100-400. Would love to see that for something fast like soccer. You mentioned it's not a sports lens, what is? (Outside the 200 2.8) I'm currently shooting Sony a6000 for family vacations, my children's sports ( volleyball, basketball, and soccer), my kids portraits. 70-200 on a6000 no longer gets me across the soccer field (growing up). Looking at upgrading to A7 III or G9 and the ecosystem behind them. I don't see a lot of Panasonic sports lumanaries on YouTube. Any suggestions or is Panasonic not there yet? Yes I watched your basketball video, thank you for shooting it!
Oh that’s interesting. 50-200 f/2.8~4.0 with an x2 teleconverter would be 100-400 5.6~8.0, right? I think that’s how that works… the 100-400 lens is a f/4~6.3, so this would be a little slower. If I’ve got that wrong let me know.

I don’t have the 100-400 now but I’m sure I can get it again. I guess I did say it isn’t really a sports lens, and I’d say that because it’s not super fast. When I think of sports lenses, I think of the 200/2.8. Mainly because sports = fast shutter speed and shallow DoF. Or like in the basketball shoot, low light. Doesn’t mean you can’t use it for it though, of course.

You’re right that there aren’t any LUMIX Ambassadors who are professional sports shooters. I think this is the last bastion of MFT. It can certainly be used, and it gets better every year, but you do still have a slight lag between real world and the EVF, especially when shooting high frame rate. But it’s slight these days. And on the G9, you get a 120fps EVF which is insane. Very very fast. For most uses, I’d say barely imperceptible. In fact there was an article recently about a sports shooter trying a G9 and getting MORE in focus photos than he did with his SLR cameras (wish I could find it but I don’t recall where I saw it, sorry). While the DFD AF may not be the best for video, it truly is the fastest for stills.

Not to denigrate shooting kids sports, but it’s not the Super Bowl or the Olympics. A G9 will most definitely do you just fine. And give you that reach you’re looking for with a 50-200 or 100-400.

I’ll try to do some sports with this lens. Sports just isn’t my thing but I can probably find something around here. School is out for the summer so all the high school games are done, but I’ll keep my ears open.
Why Panasonic is always making 'a very promising' lenses such as 12-60 and this 50-200 with mediocre variable f-stops '2.8-4.0', I don' understand why they are not making F2.8 throughout the zoom range like Olympus 40-150 f2.8!!
dude!the Fuji XF 50-140 f2.8 looks like a bombshell!It's size factor
Lafa Ramesh I HK it would be heavier and with this you can use 35-100mm 2.8 at night while this is good for wildlife without tc in contrast to the olympus
Airplanes, trains, streetcars (Portland) and maybe some birds (Eagles preferably).
i dont need this lens i dont need this lens i dont need this lens i dont need this lens i dont need this lens

haha i am a mouse
I've been using my 35-100 at 100 to video dragonflys, can fill the frame with mind boggling detail and deeply blurred backgrounds. Try something like that?
I like it!
That stabilization is beast.
If you could ( not sure if you are on the coastline ), waves and surfers in slow motion 150 and 180,
Thanks, I had to be reminded at a Agricultural conference yesterday not everyone in the world knows where Western Australia is RE Coast and Surfing, my bad. It was interesting to see a GH5s and GH4 filming there, the Camera's are so small compared to a DSLR. Would also be interesting if you use a GH5 to see what the inbuilt tele converter looks like at 1080p resolution, would be somewhere around 600mm full frame I think ?
I’m not on the coast, and while it’s only three hours away, it’s the Oregon coast. Not exactly a hot surfing spot ;-) But I do like the idea of doing slo motion. 240 with the GH5S!
sports wildlife birds ships planes
LOL thanks
Does this model come with the Panasonic teleconverter to make it 200 - 800 - also in my g85 the menu has an exteleconvert option to double the focal length
No (you saw everything in the box in the video) and that feature is for shooting HD video only
Oregon County Fair
Ah, I’ll be in Detroit then
July 13-14-15
Hmm… that’s soon, isn’t it?
What are your thoughts about the 35-100 F2.8?
Classic lens, and excellent all around. The 12-35/2.8 and 35-100/2.8 has always been the ideal filmmaker’s combo.
Try it on gx85.
That’s only if you’re shooting 1080p
Turn on exteleconvert to double your existing focal length on the g85
Hehe that’s a small camera, big lens combo!
I also have the G9. I would like to see a couple things. First how it performs at your local zoo. then I am even more curious about skin tones and how well this 50-200 would be as a travel lens option in the trilogy of F 2.8-4.0 zooms
. I already have the 8-18 and 12-60 2.8-4 and wonder if this trilogy of lenses is the way to go. A comparison with the 50-200, 100-300 and Panasonic 100-400 would be helpful
Im thinking of getting the 200mm f2.8 prime
Awesome thanks ! The Panasonic 100-400 is about equal money to the 50-200
That’s a lot of comparing but I like it! I’ll do what I can.
