Thanks again for your brilliantly helpful review on a wide range of lenses in the Pano range. Prior to watching your review I have just ordered the G9 with the 12-60 leica kit lense (for flexible use/travel). Along with a Leica 100-400 for my love of nature photography, and a 45 Leica Macro for insect, food, portrait & product compositions.
Question. I think perhaps I have overlooked the need for a fast versitile lense for darker light situations or night time. Which lense would you recommend to complete my kit for the foreseeable future? Capable of Astro Photography, and a good all rounder for landscape, (bokeh) product shots & family events etc
@@photojoseph Thank you so very much for your advice. This has helped me shorten my short list :-)
Nice kit! The fastest lenses, depending on the focal length you want, are the 15mm Leica f/1.7 https://geni.us/3KtyCz, the Zonghyi 25mm f/0.95 if you don't mind all manual https://geni.us/rPpGbZn or the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 https://geni.us/ww4A6LA if you want auto, then for longer focal length, the 42.5mm f/1.2 Nocticron is AMAZING https://geni.us/h2UL
I have the 12-35mm lens which lens would be better out of the 7-14 or the 8-18mm lens?
8-18 is a superior lens
4 1/2 minutes of unrelated jabbering before ever getting to the lenses. Not good.
It’s a live show.
Can you which 2 best lense for you
I was waiting for the 20mm pancake.
Can you please share your experience as to how you went on to become a LUMIX ambassador?
I barely know anyone who covers the Panasonic product line-up like you do! I am a huge LUMIX fan and your channel is heavenly for anyone like me. Cheers!
Awesome, welcome!
get on with it!
Keep your politics out. You'll alienate folks for no good reason.
Looking for some creamy bokeh on the gh5. I have the 12 to 60 leica right now. Probably going to do a lot of Vlogging and recording myself.
A lot of Olympus lenses have something they called “feathered” bokeh on their lenses. Google that and you should find some good stuff.
PhotoJoseph Thanks So Much for the Reply. Your Awesome!
Look at the 8-18 for convenience in selfie-vlogging, and the 12/1.4 for the most bokehlicious wide lens. Obviously at wide focal lengths truly shallow DoF isn’t common though. Also look at this 7.5mm f/2 lens. Interesting (but I haven’t tried it)
https://bhpho.to/2ycUq7K
I know this is a year old... But it's bugging me. The 42.5 f1.7 does have OIS. You can even hear it when you shake it 😊
What is best lense for street shooting on GX8
Depends on how close you like to get. My favorite is the 15mm Leica or 25mm Zhongyi
If you go for a faster lens, thats fine, but if you go for  slower lens, it doesn't make it less sharp ? or does it ?
Well… complicated question. The speed of a lens does NOT define sharpness. It defines depth of field, yes, but not sharpness. That said, most fast lenses are sharper because they are premium lenses with better glass and coatings. Slower lenses are budget lenses so don’t get the best of everything. Make sense?
Just bought the Panasonic GX85 last week. Added the 42.5mm f1.7, 25mm f1.4, and the 7-14mm f4. Happy with all of them.
Awesome!
Hi,

I would not choose any of the listed lenses. I shoot solely with the Olympus M.Zuiko Pro lenses. They are very versatile for any situation, robust and I get great results. I tried the New lumix leica lens , which did not even give me close results. I probably need to mention that I shoot shoot mainly architecture. Also, to me it is very important the customer service from Olympus. You get your lens repaired, certified and cleaned back in a very reasonable time.
What do you think of the 25mm 1.4 Leica lens?? I don’t know if you covered that lens specifically. But I was wondering if I should get that or the Olympus lens 25mm 1.2
Dzmitry Aleinik yeah it bothered me at first but maybe we’re just babied from such quiet mirrorless machines!! I used to use film cameras and they were really noisy. But yeah I finally got myself a copy of the 25 1.4 “panaleica” lens and... I love it. I thought I’d love the bokeh the most but it’s definitely the colors that it brings out. Gh5 paired with the panaleica is a beast of a combo. All it had to be is weather sealed and it would’ve not left my camera ever. But it is only a “50mm” focal length but standard is good.
I've used Leica 25 1.4, but switched to Lumix 25 1.7, because of the horrible, unbearable "rattlesnake" noise it produced while focusing in photo mode. I find Lumix great for situations when you want that shallow depth of field. Highly recommended.
The 25/1.5 is nice but honestly my copy I’ve always felt is a little soft around the edges. Never compared to the Olympus version but that’s a lot bigger isn’t it? I could be wrong.
Hi @photojoseph. Love your shows. Do you know anyone interested for trade; panasonic 12-35mm 2.8, panasonic 25mm 1.7, two pocketwizard flextt5 panasonic, and panasonic fl360 flash in exchange for the panasonic 42.5mm lense? We also can sell as bundle.
Have you used the
14-140 f3.5-5.6?
For travel in the summer it’s a great lens, photos and video, get the last firm update for better IBIs with the G85, I used this lens in Sardinia together with the 20mm f1.7 (for low light/moving objects evening shots). See samples in my Sardinia album https://www.flickr.com/photos/60485344@N00/albums/72157685760451605 . Our last city trip to vienna in december I used the 12-35 f2.8 https://www.flickr.com/photos/60485344@N00/albums/72157685760451605 forbetter low light during the entire focal lenght. In June we go to the rockies, and I will take the 14-140 mm together with the small 20mm and the Olympus 75-300mm for wildlife.
I wondered, too.

I got one to use with my GX8. I like the range, but it's kind of dark when focusing. Also, I'm not sure how sharp it is. I'm still getting used to M43, so it could also be the smaller cropped format.
+Yoko Kurama I have not, sorry
@PhotoJosephs I am interested in the GX85 because I like the compact size, but would still like to be able to put a zoom like the 100-300. Would a lens this big make the camera unstable or difficult to hold?
+nikki greaves Not at all. It’s just a small body on a big lens… it may look a little funny, but it still works!
i wonder what do think on using oly lenss like 12-40 and 7-14 on gh5 ?
+Shay Bar haven’t used them but I’m sure they’re great. Olympus makes great lenses, too.
Too long winded!
I want to start by saying I am new to your channel but I am really enjoying what I have seen so far! So thank you!

As an Olympus user I found this really interesting to watch - I only bought my system a year ago so I am only starting to look at expanding my range of lenses. The first lens I bought that was not the kit lens was a Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II. And I love it. So I was really surprised that you didnt even mention it. Its such an affordable tiny lens. I can see myself stilll using it as I collect more/high quality lens especially when going out to dinner.

I havent read through the comments so I am sorry if I am going over something someone else has already brought up but if not I think this lens deserves at least a mention in your lineup. I am now off to watch the rest of the series! I probably should have done that first :S

Thanks again
That is a nice lens indeed. I have it but honestly it's rarely used. I featured it in a video on using the LUMIX G7 as a car-cam a while ago, but that may be about it.
+PhotoJoseph ...Aren't all of these youtube videos "Recorded Live"? How else could they be recorded?
+jprete755 Edited and not broadcast live. My show is live, and recorded for rebroadcast later.
Whats the best g85 lense lineup for video?
+Asami Korra Too vague of a question. Please be specific about what you’re shooting, budget, etc and I’ll try to help.
Hi Joseph, I got a steal on a used Olympus, and I'm trying to use the Olympus Zuiko Lens ED 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 with my Lumix gh5 for video only, I bought a 4/3 to micro 4/3 adapter with auto focus, I don't need or want auto focus, but when I attach the lens the focus ring grinds as if the auto focus is on, (I turned it off on the lens). I don't know how to turn it off so I can focus smooth, the ring is smooth when it is detached from the camera. I've been looking all over the internet and decided to finally ask you, the expert! Please help, thank you so much for your help!
I’ll address your comment LIVE right here https://youtu.be/WY0BfGtvgh8 on PhotoJoseph‘s Photo Moment 2017-09-11
hello photojoseph i have boaster speed metabone 0.71 with sigma 18 - 35 for gh5 how is work.
Hi Joseph, can you suggest a lens with a super easy, loose, smooth focus?...when I try to rack focus with my Lumix 12-60 2.8 with follow focus it moves the camera, even when I lock everything down. Thanks!
+Oh! Show Productions I have not. That's a whole other area I need to explore.
Thanks Joseph! You are awesome to answer mine and all the other questions! this looks great. btw, have you ever tried the Veydra Cine lenses?
+Oh! Show Productions Try adding handles to the lens. Some focus rigs get really expensive but this might be enough for you. Plus be sure to really, really lock the camera down tight. Heavy tripod and even weigh it down with a bag. For the handles, watch this: https://youtu.be/KMKDFFCZ7IQ
Joseph, is there a way to display the focus numbers on the GH5 while focusing so you can rack focus numerically?...similar to the fixed lens camcorders? Thanks!
+Oh! Show Productions No, sorry
Sorry but I cant watch the whole Video. Do you talk about the Pana Leica 8-18 in this Video? I just ordered the lens for my GH5 and want to know what you think of it. Greetings from Germany
PhotoJoseph ok thanks 👍
+dira pictures I don't have a copy yet so I do talk about it but not from experience e
Damn this guy talk to much!
@PhotoJoseph I love the 25mm f0.95 speedmaster too, but just wish it could make up its mind what it was!

The de-clicked aperture clearly screams "video". But... video often means a rig.

It's so narrow and the focus ring is so very close to the mount that it's incredibly difficult to find a gear ring that fits and doesn't rub against the handgrip (which you thankfully don't need to hold on a rig)

The changing length on focus also makes it impossible to use a matte box with a standard adaptor ring/doughnut setup. A skirt can work, but I'm constantly worried that the thing will slip off, you definitely need an aftermarket hood or adapter ring to hook the skirt over, given that the lens doesn't come with a hood.

Speaking of which, it's also very very prone to flare. Not automatically a bad thing, though when I want flare artistically, I usually prefer to just add it in post.

Also... I do so like the little box that it comes in :)
Hi,

I need a suggestion in second half of August I will go Iceland. there will be the possibility to appreciate the northern lights. Will the Leica 12 - 60 enough for filming and make photo at this phenomenon it I need something like a f1.8 / f1.4 lens.
Regard

ugo
Ugo Merlini 15mm is deffenitly solid. If you have the money then get the 12mm f1.4 over it. A 25mm would be nice too i guess. I'd probably go for one of the f0.95 lenses for 25mm. There is the voitlander, Mitakon and slr magic 25mm f0.95 lenses. Voitlander also makes a 17.5mm and a 10.5mm f0.95 as well.
PhotoJoseph
so I must choose from
1 Leica 25mm f1.4
2 Leica 15mm f1.7
3 Leica 12mm f1. 4

which is your choice from the best to the worse?
regards
ugo
+Ugo Merlini I've never photographed the northern lights but I would want the fastest lens possible. So the 12-60 probably isn't the best choice.
@PhotoJoseph The 35-100 f4-5.6 and 42.5 f1.7 both have stabelization actually.
Oh cool! I guess it's just not a hardware switch. Thanks!
@photojoseph I'll be changing my 7-14mm to the 8-18mm, so that I get access to a filter thread for fitting the ND filters for video work. I know I keep mentioning it to you, but I'm surprised you still haven't been given access to the lens by Panasonic (to do some YouTube Live ooo'ing), as last week, I think, one of the big online UK stores (WEX Photographic) had some 8-18mm stock appear...but not for very long it seems. I was sooooo tempted to get the credit card out and probably would have done if the stock was there the day after.
That's a great reason to go to the 8-18! And yeah I'm surprised I don't have one either, but as far as I know none of the Luminaries do. I'll check in again about it though actually. Thanks!
The Lumix f2.8 lens mark2 versions also have smoother iris control specifically when zooming.
@photojoseph No can't do it (change to the 100-400mm). I don't want to buy another set of 4 ND filters for the bigger thread size, for maybe just the one lens. I have 58mm and 67mm dia. which covers the lens system I'm building in MFT. WILL be interested though when you show us the results of your test (if you do) of the 100-400mm just how quickly the aperture ramps up to f/6.3 when you move away from the 100mm setting, as doesn't the aperture on the 12-60mm ramp up pretty quickly from 12mm?
The speed master 25mm f0.95 is an absolute marvel. I love it :)))
I hope they release an update to the older Leica 15 and 25mm lenses.
Joseph Hinkle it's not as sharp as my 25 f1.4, therefore our needs improving as I prefer the 15mm length, also they need a 30mm prime
Brian Cullen The 15mm f1.7 isn't old and it is one of the sharpest available for m43 while only being $300-$600. I don't really see much room for improvement.
I was thinking about buying a GX8 as my first (semi)pro camera, but seeing the prices of these lenses kinda brings me down... I can barely afford the body (used). Are there any full frame lenses that you would recommend to use with an adapter (not a speedbooster 'cause I obviously don't have the money for that)?
Lenard Stipkovic buy used lenses. you can get the 14mm f2.5 for around $80-$120 the 25mm f1.7 is available for around $160. you can get a 12-60 f3.5-5.6 in a kit for about a $100 extra or buy it separate for $250 or less. Even the f2.8 zooms can be picked up for as low as $500. There are so many cheap options.
+Lenard Stipkovic Offhand, no, sorry. But remember that you have a huge availability of third party lenses, and then those on the used market. A GX8 is a fantastic camera so pairing it with even the old Russian lenses like I mentioned in this video will bring you loads of enjoyment. Ultimately yes you'll want to save towards better glass but don't let a lack of the best lenses slow you down. Remember, a great photographer can make great pictures with a crappy instamatic. Photography is about the photographer, not the camera :-) Good luck and enjoy!
knut olson I bought two lenses used, they have been great.
Go for the panny 20mm F1,7,Sigma 60mm F2,8 Art and the Oly 45mm F1,8 if you want prime lens, and they are reasonable in price used and new. They are very good lenses, but if you just want a all in one zoom lens go for the:Oly 14mm - 140mm F4.0-5,6 mk2.
Lenard Stipkovic just save up. It's worth it, get the Olympus 12-40 Pro to start with.
@PhotoJoseph: Any updates on Panasonic's efforts to enhance the GH5's AF or is this a dead issue? Thank you.
+Swing Away Definitely not dead but at this time I don't know anything beyond my official statement.
@PhotoJoseph: What about the Leica DG Summilux 12mm f1.4? You might want to try it out... it probably will replace your beloved Leica DG Summilux 15mm f1.7! :-)
For the person who asked about the Godox system, they've released a small flash (the TT350-O) that has ttl/hss for Panasonic and Olympus, works great stand alone on camera. In the next few months they are going to release the X1T-O (a ttl/hss trigger) and a firmware update for all their other hotshoe flashes and studio strobes. Testing it on the GX8 using the TT350 as a trigger w/ other flashes without the firmware update, I can get 1/2000sec hss with a bit of banding, Oly users are showing full sync up to 1/8000sec no banding. I'll do some more tests once the new firmware/triggers are out.

Also, I still love my first m43 lens, the Pany 20/1.7. It's slow to focus, but it just works for me.
+Fielding Smith Thanks!!
Snorkel lenses were developed to shoot the interiors of cars.
+Christopher Peppey Cool!
@photojoseph kindly make video on anamorphic lenses and adapters for micro 4/3..i bought gh5 for cinematic looks
+MADAN ARYAL I will eventually
