i thought a vault was compressed, if not compressed then why so long to open a big vault?

If you have a poke around the site you’ll find a post by Joseph explaining that a vault is an aperture library with a different extension. The only special thing is that you can do an incremental backup to to.
Not much scope for compression if your thumbs and previews are jpegs and your RAWs are in lossless compressed format - the amount that’s compressible (although you could argue why backup thumbs and previews).
