Borderless printing of pictures with borders - Aperture/Epson 3880 #1

I may be my own worst enemy. I have a picture that I have applied a border to in Silver Efex Pro and now want to print it borderless as the print is toned Ambrotype. Now I have got the aspect ratio slightly wrong for A4 (too squat) and hence will have to trim a little white off the top and bottom. I can live with that. However I'm puzzled by the Epson settings which don't do what I would have expected:

- Borderless Expand expands the printed image a little and loses half of the border off the edge. This is the less bad option.

- Borderless Retain Size - as far as I can tell this should not expand the image but fit the width and leave white top and bottom. However it expands the photo more and cuts off three-quarters of the border at the sides.

What am I missing, anyone? And do I just have to live with the printer not being able to work out that an A4 sheet is 210 wide and - as far as I can tell - overspraying by 5mm each side?
