Now everyone can play with the new Photos!

I know a lot of you have been waiting to have a play (even if you’ve already decided to go with Lightroom etc.) - so go get it everyone.

Remember to backup everything first of course.

Chris,

I though about downloading the Beta until I realized I it installed a Beta OS X 10.10.3.
Only have one Mac so I will have to wait for the final release for now.

Yes - not for the faint-hearted, I admit.

Joseph got in shortly before/after my post and was clearer about the caveats/pitfalls. Some fortunate enough to have a second Mac/MacBook will be in a better position, or those with the available space and tech-savvy to install on a separate partition.

I’ve had the developer seeds, so I’ve been lucky enough to be able to play with Aperture/Photos/Lightroom versions of my library - with all the necessary backup precautions of course.

Experiencing all the same qualms as everyone else here re: shortcomings in LR as opposed to Aperture. I’m of a similar opinion to Joseph on Photos I think: I will definitely use it going forward as part of my toolset, especially because of the sync across all my OS X and iOS devices. I can confirm that this is working very well too, even on the developer seed of OS X with the current, non-developer iOS on iPhone/iPad - for me anyway :)

Joseph has a posted an article on the main page now - so, this is probably a superfluous thread now:

Joseph: feel free to axe this one if you see fit - I (and Stuart) won’t be offended :)

I got Photos up and running on a separate drive (10.10.3) imported a handful of pictures to play with to see what it could do. To my surprise it could NOT do something that I have been used to do with my Mac since 1985, DELETE a file or picture. Beside that I think Photos will have some potential down the road for us there are between profesional and armature level.

10.10.3 discourages the installation of camera raw 6.03. The installer gives the message:”a newer version of camera raw is present on this machine.” Unfortunately the 10.10.3 version of camera raw does not include the new cameras on Camera Raw 6.03.

I found out that selecting and holding down the ‘Control” key a menu pups up and from there you can delete a folder or picture. By knowing that I think that I can work with it for now, knowing that it hopeful will be improved. In response to the new ‘camera raw’ I had the same problem.

I think the new photos is a good starting point but hope Apple are not too slow in making the improvements it is going to need. For instance I have made a smart album on my Mac but these don’t sync across othe Apple devices. Also the ability to use plugins needs to be available.
