Missing files/photos in Aperture.. #1

Hello all,

I am about to get better use to the new photo app and I would like to move my photos from aperture (just those are taken with my iPhones and other none important photos. I will continue to use aperture to all my dias/negative photos from my childhood (those pictures need some repair).. Now, I was wondering since I think I am missing some files and therefor took a look into my timemachine backup. I could see my backup (about a month back) were about 10 gb bigger than it is now!

The only thing I could think of, is that time I was starting with Photos I might had got it all wrong how to start up a new library.. I did delete the library since I was just testing Photos at that time. And what’s more confusing is, some times back I did migrate Aperture and iPhoto and I “thought” when deleting the Photolibrary that it was only some old files in iPhoto..

Now to the more importing thing.. How can I get that library back from timemachine without destroying my time that I had use in the last month in aperture with working with some of my old photo’s? I had a vault on my external drive. But I am very afraid doing anything because I spent HOURS on cleaning up old photos.

Thanks in advance and I am sorry this is my first post her! :)

Hi Jesper

If you right click / secondary click / command click on an object in Time Machine it will give you the option to restore it to a different location from the original.

Hello David,

I am not sure how to do it, but I will give it a try and response as soon I can.

Thanks.

Hello again David,

It seems to be ok, right now it’s copying to my external drive.

Now, I went through some of the backups of my photofiles on timemachine to see what was going on.

I hope anyone can help me out.

Aperture: on April 8th my Aperture size was 69GB - the last backup before the new photo app was installed. April 15th the size still 69GB

Photo: April 15th the size was 75GB and was a library I created. There is also another small  Photo library about 2 GB on the same date. So Library 1 is 75GB and Library 2 about 2 GB.

iPhoto is also about 2 GB but I migrate it with Aperture some times back and I don’t what those 2 GB are since it was migrated..

The funny part is, on the April 25th I delete the Photo library (1) on 75GB, because I found out that I still need Aperture for my cleaning project on the old photographs and all the bad talk about this app! At the same time my Aperture library had since been about 56 GB.. So because I deleted the big photo library I suddenly also deleted few GB from Aperture for good!

I am now getting the backup file from Time Machine on another drive, but I think all my photos are in a mess and I don’t know how to get back on track with all my files (deleted duplicated files etc..)

Jesper:

1) Perhaps a good thing to sleep on it before doing anything

2) Work slowly and methodically and use smart albums to be sure of what you have

3) Searching for Aperture Duplicate Detector on the web will bring up some options.

Note that the size of an Aperture library depends on the previews generated. If you have deleted previews it will get smaller.
