Capture One Express (for Sony) #1

Like many I’ve been following articles from around the web and on various forums on what to replace Aperture with.

I just realized that there is a free version of Capture One. It apparently comes with new Sony cameras. My Sony camera is an older model and did not come with Capture One Express (for Sony). However can be downloaded from http://www.phaseone.com/sony. The Express version is missing some features (tethered capture, local adjustments, repair layers, film grain, keystone correction). It also will only work with Sony raw files. You can upgrade to a Pro (for Sony) version for $30. It has all the missing features but is still restricted to Sony raw files. Additionally you can upgrade to a full unrestricted version for about $270.

So if you have a Sony camera you can try Capture One Express without usual time limit of the trial. When first start Capture One Express (for Sony) it asks you what version want to use (Pro, Pro (for Sony), Express (for Sony, …). I selected Express for Sony and it started right up. Now I just need to decide how I want to test it. If I like it I will need to upgrade as I have additional file formats in addition to Sony raw that I will eventually need to handle.

I have just successfully imported some images.

So I may be buying a Sony A7ii sometime soon. I see that the Capture One Express for Sony will be able to edit those files - great!  But, what happens to the many thousands of photos I have that are in Aperture right now and were taken with a Canon?  Any idea?

I’m in no hurry to dump Aperture but when I do, I’d like to have just one place to go to handle all my stuff.

@Travis

Well - if you want to handle the Canon files you could upgrade to the generic edition of Capture One Pro. Besides of that - if further editing those (old?) photos is not necessary - you could either archive an Aperture library just with those or migrate to a Photos.app library.
