Getting your head around LR DAM #1

As sad as it makes me, I like most here have decided to move on from Aperture.  No sense dragging it out any longer.  I’ve decided to move to LightRoom (Mostly because of plugin support and large support community for it and PS) probably under CC plan.

My question to the group, is for those that have made the switch to LR, how long has it taken you to get used to LR?  I like some of the features of LR over Aperture but I’m struggling to get my brain around the new work flow.  Just trying to get a gauge of how dense I’m being with this.  I know everyone is different but I’m guessing most were using Aperture because of the superior DAM it offered.  I’m sure it will take a little time to get used to doing it another way.  I’m reading as much as I can and watching as many videos as I can but the catalog organization is just not clicking yet.  I don’t want to switch over 100% until I’m comfortable with it.

Thanks for any feedback

I still don’t like Lightroom’s DAM features much. They work, is about all I can say.

Are you trying to do something in particular? It’s probably not possible to “do it like Aperture.”

It isn’t anything specific.  Just trying to gauge how long it has taken others to “get used” to the LR DAM.  I’ve tried to switch a few times in the last couple of years but kept going back to Aperture because it was so much easier.  The whole catalog vs library is what I’m trying to wrap my head around.  I’m sure I will get it (don’t have much of a choice now), just trying to get an idea of how long it might take so I don’t let myself get frustrated.  I guess my post was equal amounts venting as it was question.

Of course it depends on how much you use Lightroom, but I would guess a couple of weeks and you’ll know what is similar to Aperture, what’s not, and how you’ll use it.

I don’t know if this will help but in Aperture I had a Library for each year. Then a folder for each month and a Project for each shoot, or job, for that month organized by date. In Lightroom they advise keeping everything in one big library so I organize by Collections. I import the folder into the Library then do my initial sort. The keepers I assign one star. In Collections I have a Collection Set for each month. Then I make a Collection from the one star keepers and put it in the Collection Set by date. I am then through with the Library  module until my next import. You can access the Collections from the Develop Module or any other module so you don’t have to keep bouncing back and forth.

I still haven’t figured how to make a sub-collection yet, or even if you can. That could be used for Albums. Maybe later.

In that I don’t use all of the modules I have hidden the ones I don’t use. I only have Library, Develop and Print Modules showing. I think it looks better that way.

As for wishing, I would love to be able to  create my own Keyboard Shortcuts. I still can’t get used to using “r” for crop!
