Slideshow #1

I have created a slideshow and I would like to add music.  I’ve bought the song I want to add and it shows up in my iTunes folder.  I don’t want the music to start at the beginning.  I would like to add it at a certain slide.  Is that possible?

OK….so I figured out how to add the music   : )

But now when I go to burn it to a CD I get a message that the burn folder is too big for the disc and to remove some of the files. I don’t want to do that.  All of the CD Packs at Staples were   52X  700MB/Mo  80min…….all of which means nothing to me.  Is there another way of exporting a slide show , rather than quicktime that would make the slideshow compatible with the CD….or is there some other type of CD that I need to purchase????

Thanks,

Helen

Hi Helen

All CDs are about 700MB, DVDs are around 5GB, so it might fit a DVD. The problem is that the QuickTime export is to a video so displaying a single slide for an hour would take as much space as an hour of video. Start by exporting it to your desktop to see just how big it is.

Alternative to QuickTime would be to export the parent project and the slideshow as a new Aperture library. That would allow it to be played on any Mac using iPhoto. But then, you’d need to copy the track into iTunes on that other Mac and link it back in again. Bother.

Does that help?

David….Thank you so much for your response.  My slideshow is 1.05 GB.  I had tried to burn it to a CD and that didn’t work.  Will now try a DVD+R….it says on the side of the package it is 4.7 GB so hopefully that will work…..fingers crossed.  I will post back to let you now how it went.

Thanks again for your reply.

When I first started the burn I got a message that the disc want’t compatible or wasn’t recognized or something….don’t remember exactly what….anyway I clicked OK and the burn continued anyway.  However, when I just went to view it, it had only recorded the music.  I’m thinking of getting one of those little stick drive thingies that you can download images to……do you think that would work????

Just tried to copy the slideshow to a 16GB Jumpdrive.  Once again I got music…choppy at that…and no pictures!  Thought this should’ve worked.  I’ve copied it to my EHD without a problem….any other suggestions….?????

The size of the slideshow is just over 1GB.

Thanks,

Helen

Hi Helen

I can only think that the speed of transfer off the stick drive is too low for streaming video. If you copy it on and it doesn’t play, but can copy that file back and it does play ok then low speed would be the explanation. I’ve just tried playing a slideshow off a USB3 stick and it works fine - but perhaps your mac has USB2.

Another though - depends on what you’re trying to do - but you could try sharing it on YouTube. It will probably whine when it spots a bit of copyrighted music. You’ll need to decide whether the nasty man from the record label will come after you - seems unlikely!

If it doesn’t help, can you says bit more about how you’re trying to share this?

Hope that helps

A new question!!!!!  I thought I had it.  I bought a new Lexar 16 GB drive. Exported the slideshow straight from Aperture on to the drive.  Finished exporting and I thought I was good.  Was able to view the slideshow from the stick.  Then I put the stick into our desktop computer….also an Apple…has quicktime.  Once again I got music but no pictures!!!!!  Came back to my laptop and it works fine.

There are just pictures in the slideshow….no video.  As you can probably guess I’m an amateur at this but I’ve spent hours editing pix etc. and have really done a beautiful slideshow.  I want to give it to the mother of the bride….my best friend.  I am thinking now that I should have probably converted the pix to jpegs.  They are all tiffs.

Don’t understand what you said about USB 3 stick v. USB 2 stick.  I want to be able to give it to her some way or another….ideally on a disc….but since that isn’t working a stick transfer would be another option.  Sorry for rambling!!!

Thanks,

Helen

Hi Helen

I feel your pain!

If you have exported a slideshow from Aperture I’m pretty sure it has exported it as a QuickTime Movie. That’s just how it does it. So whether your pics are jpegs or tiffs in Aperture they’ll have been converted to movie format in the QuickTime file. So it’s not that. If it plays on your laptop off the stick I’d guess your laptop is more modern than your desktop Apple? If you click on the Apple symbol top left of the screen and select: About this Mac; More Info; System Report and look under Hardware to see what version of USB each computer has. If the laptop is USB3 and the desktop has USB2 then it’s about speed.

OK - what’s this about USB2 vs USB3 - well USB is a standard connector, but over the last twenty or so years speeds have been raised. If you connect two USB devices you’ll get the speed of the slower one. So if you have a new Lexar drive (USB3) and a newish laptop (USB3) then it will play at USB3 speed which is perhaps fast enough for video; but if your desktops is older then perhaps it is USB2 and isn’t.

None of this matters in the slightest!! Give the stick to the mother of the bride, get her to copy the QuickTime file onto her machine and I’m pretty confident it will play. Let me know how you get on!

orrabest!

Hi David,

Thank you for sticking with me through this problem.  I’m hoping you are right about the transfer from the stick to my friend’s computer.  I had another thought.  I have dropbox….can’t say I know a lot about that either but if my friend has it….maybe I could send it to her that way????

Another question…..since this is a quicktime movie would it only be able to be downloaded to another Mac?  If I’m starting to be a pest….don’t worry about getting back to me.  In the end I will definitely let you know when my friend has finally gotten the slideshow….one way or another.

Thanks again,

Helen

Hi Helen
Now I thought you sounded British but if you’re still up you must be an insomniac like me!
As far as I know QuickTime will play on Windows computers, if the operating system doesn’t support it then it’s easy enough to download something that will.
Yes, Dropbox will work fine. Copy the file into dropbox/public then right-click it and select ‘get public link’. Paste that into an email and send to the M.O.B. Give it an hour or so to upload to Dropbox.
cheers

Hi David….Just wanted to give you an update.  Spoke at length with an Apple Aperture expert yesterday.  He is still working on why I can’t download the slideshow to a disc….but is determined to figure out this issue.  Will post back with the final outcome.

Success at last!!!!  In order for my friend to be able to play the slideshow on her computer, this is what needs to be done.  1.  Copy the slideshow from my memory stick to her desktop.  2.  Try to open it with Quicktime.  3.  If that doesn’t work there is a free program that can be downloaded from the web called vlc player.  Once downloaded, you open the vlc player and drag the slideshow onto the player.  Presto…perfect slideshow!!!!  WHEW….took a long time getting here…..but there’s nothing like a happy ending to make you forget about all the aggravation  : )

Hopefully this info will be of help to someone in the future.  Can’t say enough good things about my experience with Apple Care….and thanks to David for his help along the way!!!!
