Hi Joseph

Am I able to ask a question that I have submitted to the forum ?

https://www.apertureexpert.com/forum/creating-auto-refreshing-slideshow/…

Graham,

I read that thread. Seems like quite a challenge. I do recall someone talking about a third party software for doing slideshows that seemed to solve the auto refresh problem though. Did you read all the comments in Tom's original post?

I'd rather address questions that are a bit more commonly asked, but go ahead and repost the question here anyway and see if others comment on it or what other challenges come up.

Joseph

Appreciate that this may be a bit of a long winded one!!! Thats why I thought I better ask.

Yes Joe mentioned MyPhotoFrame which seems perfect and its only £1.99 in the Mac App Store. I haven’t tried it out yet but will do soon and I’ll post it on ApertureExpert if you would like me to. In the mean time if anyone else has any input please feel free.

Thanks here it is :-

I have read Thomas Boyd post on Creating an Auto Refreshing Slideshow from Eye-Fi Upload but it doesn’t quite work for me. Also Aperture Hot Folder application doesn’t appear to be working with Mavericks :-(

So I was hoping someone here may be able to help me out.

I will be shooting tethered into Aperture at a festival in a few months time and would like to have a slide show displayed on a 2nd  second screen of all the shots I will be taking through the day. The major problem as I think I see it is I can’t get it to auto refresh. And as Joseph said Aperture can’t do this yet.

What I have found out and can do is use the Desktop & Screen saver in System preferences. On the second screen I believe it can only be different from main screen on the Desktop photo and not the screen saver. With that said I can point it to a specific folder have it change a minimum of every 5 seconds and in random order. BUT I can’t make it refresh!! If I could work out this my problem would be solved. I have also looked in Automator but need to do some more investigation.

I'll try to address this as a post in the future. Too much for this Live Training, but thanks!

When using Update Metadata from Original  what are the field names that are checked and Updated.  I don’t think File size is one of them.  When would one use Update Metadata….  ?

cheers

Hi Joseph,

I just returned from an eight week sailing trip with photos from my “travel zoom” (read jpeg only) all nicely imported into iPhoto for iOS on my iPad2 with captions and keywords. I am paralyzed with trying to determine the BEST way to get them into Aperture on my Mac mini.  I’m back rev in OS’s with OSX 10.8.5 on my desktop and iOS 6 .1.3 on the iPad2 (I keep reading that 7 doesn’t run well on the old iPad).  This means I don’t have the airdrop option.

I’ve run a limited test, and the only way I’ve gotten the photos from iPad to Aperture is to export 50 at a time (any more and it wedges) from iPhoto iOS into iTunes, and then save to the desktop from iTunes after a sync.  Then I can import into Aperture.

The good news is that the captions and keywords are coming in ok.  Bad news is this is pretty cumbersome.  I found I couldn’t select an album in iPhoto for iOS all at once- I have to tap each photo individually.  Is there any other approach I can try?

Thanks- Ann

Ann, are you using iCloud? I don't remember if that's part of iOS 6 or not until iOS 7…

Sorry I did not see your follow-on question.  I was just wondering why since I subscribed to this forum.  Is there something else  I should subscribe to?

Yep, you are subscribed. Check your spam folder, probably went there. Be sure to set up a rule so mail from info@apertureexpert.com gets through!

Hello Joseph,

Do you recommend importing always into Aperture?

My workflow, which admittedly used to proceed to iPhoto, has been to import using Image Capture to a new named folder for each ‘Event’, then do a pre-sort of that folder using PhotoReviewer (a great app) wherein I could reject the useless and sort the rest, typically into folders for First Picks, Seconds, and Maybe-worth-keeping but also, if appropriate, into Family, Stitchers, HDRs etc all with single keys for each decision. It could also separate the RAWs if asked although I would tend to do that subsequently with the Finder.

This extra workflow was originally initiated to prevent the iPhoto libraries from becoming bloated and as Aperture also is one humongous library accessible only from within itself it remains a pertinent procedure. Svelte is swift.

Typically I would then import only the Firsts and Seconds into Projects/Events and the Stitchers & HDRs etc would be merged or whatever in an appropriate application prior to importing into Aperture.  Those sorted into Family (or Projects, Planet, Travel, Light and a number of others) would actually go into their individual libraries and I would use iPhoto Buddy (another great app) to launch whichever library I wanted to dwell in. As things currently exist Light has become my Aperture library because that is my work and the rest remain as iPhoto ones, because they are something else.  Which might segue nicely into what would have been my first question.

So …

Do you actually recommend importing always into Aperture? And if so, could you talk a little about why so?

New to aperture so this may be a simple question.  I have created an album and have dragged photos to this album.  I want to modify several of these photos (crop) but do not want the original to show this change in the project.  How do I do this.

Paul

You need an answer right away and the forums are a better place to post that this Live Training  lesson coming up on Friday.  Shot answer is that your original files are never altered.  If you want a version cropped but not the original then.. highlight the image and go to Photo > New Version from Original  and crop or adjust away.  Cheers

Hey Joseph

I’m sure this is not possible but wish it was.

If I wanted to make a preset/effect and then brush in or out the result can I.

I can do this with an effect using only one block i.e. Enhance. But can’t find a way to do it by using 2 or more blocks. I think what I need is a Super brush.

Cheers

Graham

Hi Joseph,

I recently started shooting RAW

Under adjustments> add adjustments there is “RAW fine tuning” that looks a lot like the “regular” adjustments I have always used.

For editing RAW do you work from “RAW fine tuning” or the “regular” screen?  Advantages

either way?

Thanks.

Rob

I’m also new to Aperture and switching over from Capture NX2. This is a great site and your videos are helping me wrap my head around Aperture. I have several questions:

I too would like to know how/why to use “raw fine tuning”. Is this to be used to set the imported image to the “look” you want?

Could you do an overview of how Aperture handles raw files? Are the versions created with every edit step a JPEG? If I make standard Aperture adjustments (white balance, exposure), I create a new version. If I then add a NIK adjustment to this adjusted image I create another version. This gets confusing and I have a problem when I leave and come back to Aperture finding the last adjusted image where I left off. How to tell which version has all the steps applied?

Which brings up what is the best workflow order for editing raw files? What to do first and when to apply sharpening. Only use edge sharpening in Aperture? When to use the different type of NIK sharpening?

In Capture NX I used this workflow:

Global adjustments: white balance, exposure, levels

Local adjustments: use control points for specific areas of image (now with NIK plug ins)

Crop

Sharpen

Is this the way to approach it with Aperture?

Well, that’s a lot of questions!

Terry

Hi Joseph, followup question re sharpening. When you say you do no sharpening in Aperture, do you mean no extra sharpening besides the RAW fine tuning settings, or do you have sharpening turned off there too? Thanks!

No extra sharpening. I almost never touch the RAW Fine Tuning controls, and definitely never reduce sharpening there. I also essentially never use Aperture's sharpening tool. I will use the Enhance > Definition slider quite a bit, because I feel that it adds a little “sharpening” without the telltale sharpening artifacts.

And then as I said in the video, I'll do output sharpening (tailored for print) from Photoshop using Pixel Genius Photokit Sharpener. If you're printing yourself, and printing from Aperture, there are sharpening sliders in there too, but I have virtually zero experience with them as I don't have a high end printer in my studio.
