Digital Camera RAW Update 4.05 for Aperture and iPhoto — Fujifilm Users Rejoice!

Hot on the tail of the Aperture 3.4.4 update is the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.05, including… wait for it… Fujifilm cameras!

yaaaaaaayyyyy (I can hear it from here)

Here’s the list:

  • Fujifilm X20
  • Fujifilm X100S
  • Fujifilm X-E1
  • Fujifilm X-Pro1

I have a few RAW files from the X-E1, and loaded one up pre and post update. It took a few seconds of looking at the “unsupported image format” screen before it kicked in, but there it is!

Look ma, Fuji X-E1 support in Aperture!It’s in the App Store now. As of this writing it’s not on apple.com yet.

Glad we don’t have to read about lack of Fuji support anymore in the comments of every RAW update anouncement.

I’m surprised Canon T5i wasn’t in there. The last 2 Digital Rebels got RAW support before you could buy the cameras. T5i just became available at the major outlets.

It truly is a happy day.

The Leica Monochrom is not supported yet. Is a linear Dng so difficult to handle for the Apple engineers?

How about RAW support for Olympus C-5050? I know its old, but I like it a lot :)

Hopefully, XTrans support is what they’ve been waiting to have in place for the Ap4 rollout. :-)

I can say for sure but after this update I can no longer bring in DNG files exported from Light Room .. which I had been doing waiting on support for my D7100. Now it just says unsupported.

So if I delete then restore aperture from time machine before the update should that fix things again?

That won’t help. The RAW update is a MacOS X System update. It provides RAW support to Aperture, iPhoto, Preview, etc. The recent Aperture update wasn’t related to the RAW update.

If there is a way to back out a RAW update, it isn’t obvious to me.

I have Aperture 3.4.4 and OSX 10.8.3 so I should be able to install, but the software check says I need at least version 3.4. OR iPhoto 11.
Does anyone have an idea why it fails on my Mac?

I tried the download but the sam message appears. I haven’t update iPhoto for years so i’ll try deleting it first. Or can I fool the check by updating some kind of file?

Really, how interesting. OK yeah do launch iPhoto and make sure it’s up to date, and make sure everything else in Software Update has run (before trying the RAW update).

I recall some folder called “receipts” in the System folder that tracks what you’ve installed, but without looking at your system I’m not sure what to recommend trashing.

Anyway try making sure everything else is updated, first.

Thanks, Joseph, I know it’s weird. As far as I know I have everything updated, except iPhoto which I haven’t used since 2008.
Unfortunately removing iPhoto did not help and I could not find the “receipts” folder. I posted the problem to the Apple discussions.

Yaaaay is right! I downloaded the upgrade last night and got around to trying a few shots with my X-E1 this morning and my oh my. Very nice. I have been frustrated by the long wait, but so far I’m very pleased with what has emerged. I nearly sold that camera but I’m sure hanging on to it now!

If you know why the upgrade didn’t work for me the answer is easy………..
By default I have my photo programs in a separate folder under Applications. The install program only looks in Applications for Aperture so it will not find it. Moving it to Applications again solved the problem.

:-( With this latest update, support for the Fuji X-10 seems to have been cruelly snatched away. All my previously imported RAW images do not display, and when trying to import new ones am told “unsupported image format”. What’s the story?

Do you mean relaunched Aperture or OS x? I have done both.

I meant Aperture. Try importing a new photo from the same camera. Try reprocessing RAW on one of them. Then try repairing the library (see the FAQ if you don’t know how).

RAW support is never taken away, but I’ve seen this happen before and a little maintenance should fix it up.

I have tried a newe RAW import, and it doesn’t recognize it: says unsupported image format. I have done the first two of the repair options at launch of Aperture (repairing permissions and, I think it is repairing database, neither helping at all). I have also tried reprocessing an existing image but it doesn’t work. Should I try “Rebuild Database”, the third and last-resort option? The problem seems to be with the RAW converter itself, which I gather is not part of Aperture but is part of OSX. Prior to recent updates everything worked fine. Something changed.

Try creating a new library, and import a few photos there. Then create a new user and repeat. Isolate the problem.

When you say create a new user, do you mean at the level of the OS, or within Aperture?

OS. There are no users in Aperture. But do that second and only if the new library doesn’t work. We’re trying to figure out where the problem is.

I just tried creating a new library and importing a Fuji X-10 RAW image. The thumbnail appears, but when I import the image and double click on it I get the “unsupported image format” error again.

OK. I just set up a new user in OSX, imported a RAW file to Aperture, and got the same error message.

Hold on… Fuji X10? That’s not on the supported list: http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html

You said originally that these files were supported. Are you positive you weren’t looking at JPEG files? Maybe shooting RAW+JPEG and importing with JPEG as the primary?

Yes, the X-10. Are you saying the X-10 raw files have never been supported? I just went into the Library and checked the masters and there are Fuji RAW files in there, and I don’t see any paired jpegs. Remember, my problem is that there are images in my library that I can see, but when I click on them now they instantly convert to the black error icon. Something has changed. From now on I will shoot jpegs on the X10, but it’s a drag that I can’t see all the existing ones. I spent a lot of time making adjustments and filing them.

We need someone else to chime in here who has an X10. This is odd for sure.

I’m hoping an existing X10 user to verify or contradict what Michael is saying. It’s unheard of for RAW support to disappear, and since it’s not on the list it’s not an accident. So I want to know if it truly was there before, and if not, how Michael was able to see his RAW X10 files in Aperture.

Well the plot thickens. I can send you a RAW file that I imported some weeks ago (not RAW+jpeg), and which I was able to do adjustments to and file away. It still displays on my desktop. But if I were to click on it now it would convert to the “unsupported image format” icon, as others have. I can send a screen shot of the files where this is occurring (disappearing one-by-one). I also just did a trial and shot some pictures RAW+jpeg and imported them as separate files. The jpegs display, but the RAWs show as unsupported image format. So something has changed. So how was I able to import RAW files before and not now? Remember, I found a Nikon shooter on another site who is having this same problem, but his was a supported camera, and it’s jpegs that are disappearing! Go figure.

Notwithstanding Joseph’s plan to get other users to confirm it “was” working, I could give it a try if you want. Or someone else who has installed RAW 4.05 but not 4.06.

If you have a dropbox account, you can share it from there. Or you can try Cloud.app available on the Mac App Store. It’s a free app for sharing files. There’s probably a size limit for the free version but I couldn’t find it. After you install and run CloudApp, you drag a file to the little cloud icon in the menu bar and it uploads it and places the link in the clipboard. Then just paste the link somewhere (like in this forum).

This is also a great way to share screenshots and other files on this forum until Joseph’s big site upgrade makes it a built-in function.

I have had splendid results with my X-E1, but I just got around to loading some RAW images from my X-S1 and get the “unsupported image format” message. I’m a bit puzzled as I thought that this camera had the same sensor as the X-10. Anyone have any insight?

If your camera isn’t listed, then it’s not supported. The sensor is only one part of the equation, and the processor in the camera will create a file that is unique. Sorry!
