I of course don't know a thing and even the rumor sites aren't predicting this, but I am wondering if something is in store for Aperture. What are my reasons? My main reason for thinking this is that the D600 doesn't yet have support for it's RAW files under Aperture. That seems a little odd. We also haven't seen a RAW update from Apple in quite some time. That also seems odd. So that makes me think there is something in the works. The last time I recall this long of a lag WITH some major cameras lacking support was when Aperture 3 dropped.

Hopefully there will be something soon. More importantly however I would take some GOOD RAW support for the Fuji X-Pro 1 camera.

I was hopeful and very wrong. The very sad news is I don’t see it coming out at all this year. I’m also starting to think maybe ever. I still have to wonder why hu haven’t supported the D600. That should be a simple camera to support I would think.

You’re missing that there was a LOT of Aperture love today. Not only did Phil mention it about a dozen times, but it’s also featured repeatedly in the new TV ad.

Yeah… something is coming.

I was encouraged because they clearly referred to Aperture as a ‘pro’ app, several times. I’ve been worried by the iPhoto connection in the latest version.

Agreed Larry, I caught that too. Very nice!

OK, who wants to do a video edit cutting up all the times they referred to Aperture in the keynote? First to get that online on YouTube for me to embed on this site gets a $100 ApertureExpert credit.

Looks like I will have to watch the keynote. I am traveling and didn’t wach it live. Sounds like I might be able to put my pessimism behind me. The Final Cut Pro X release helped a little.

While I don’t wish to sound dismissive … and I did notice when Aperture was mentioned yesterday … Aperture has been “mentioned” at two major recent Apple hardware announcements in the past several months … while this could be reassuring for some … we are creeping up quickly to the three year anniversary of the introduction of Aperture 3 (Lightroom is now v4.2) … the mere mention of an Application does very little to enhance, improve or streamline my workflow … I would prefer to have results and not platitudes …

It’s not a video edit but here are the mentions and times in the video. Sounds like it is still very valid. Just hoping that the Nikon D600 RAW code is released soon though. Tough workflow options until then…

If Lightroom’s support of the Fuji X-Pro 1 wasn’t so poor I would consider switching just so I didn’t have to cobble something together. I am glad for the updates that we have gotten. I happen to like the new WB tool a lot. I also have grown to like the new Shadows and Highlights tool. However, It’s time for an update.

I file one request a month for X-Pro 1 support via Aperture feedback, so they are probably sick of hearing from me by now.

LR support is not that bad at all for most uses I have found and it is a heap easier than the useless Silkypix they bundle with the camera - that just belongs in the trash IMV.

I actually have bought LR and use it only for my X-Pro images.

With Zeiss releasing 3 autofocus lenses for the X mount next year and Fuji with several more of their own coming out soon I am convinced the system is here to stay and that it may well have caught some of the other makers off guard by proving so popular. The new cheaper X-E1 body will help get more users on board too.

Perhaps that will be enough to persuade Apple that it is not just a flash in the pan and worthy of their support?

Marcus–We could hope that it does push Apple to support it.

I ended up using RPP and have cobbled some sort of workflow. I take Raw+jpg in the camera and only convert the RAW files that I want to spend some time on. In many cases the jpg’s are good enough. In Aperture I had to change back to Referenced files from Managed. For the conversion RPP does a pretty nice job, but is just as difficult to use as Silkypix….maybe more. I then export a jpg from RPP and import it into the library. It’s a FrankenWorkflow but for now it works.

I’m beginning to think Apple really doesn’t have any intentions to update Aperture to include some of the features (better develop settings, lens correction) that LR4 offers.

Chris … I too am hoping for the best that Apple will include some good news for Aperture in the upcoming event … though it may only be wishful thinking … it’s time for some good news …

Charles … I too am becoming increasingly impatient as well for the other shoe to drop … for Aperture to either match or exceed Lr’s feature set in RAW development (Aperture already is vast proportions ahead in Boos and Slideshows) … it’s been far too long since the Aperture 3 was introduced … though I appreciate the small incremental improvements we have seen in the past many updates … I think most Aperture users have been expecting more from Apple …

I think maybe the bumps in the road that Apple experienced in the last go around with FCP forced them to rethink their roadmap for future offerings … thus putting them in a situation where they want to get it right the first time and not disappoint so many users … at least I keep telling myself that … :)

Several months ago it was widely reported that they were seeking to hire engineers to work on Aperture … though it was never mentioned if or how many folks Apple hired … I hope it won’t be too much longer before we see something significant …

Scott, you rock!

You win the $100 credit, no doubt.

Can you have a look at Mike’s time stamps above though? I think there are more references than what you found… any chance to edit the rest of those in, too?

Mike, you’re a champ for finding those… you have my email address, tell me what I can do for you too.

Hi Joseph,

Oops…I missed the one at 15:50, I’ll add that in. Should be updated on Youtube in a short while. The others are covered.

19:28 is the first verbal mention of Aperture. Pic is a boat winding through what I’m guessing is a river in Utah.

The 23:xx hits fall into the “Introducing the 13” Mac Book Pro” spot.

The 35:xx hits fall into moving Aperture into flash and the photo import speed comparisons.

If there’s others, let me know and I’ll get them edited in.

Thx,
-scott

Ugh…sorry for the URL churn. Doesn’t seem YouTube allows a video to be replaced. New link is http://youtu.be/3T3foD308xY. Prior link is now deleted.

Utube video of MacBook Pro w/Retina Screen using the pro app Aperture is very interesting…. as long as you don’t need a RAW conversion upgrade. The timing just doesn’t make sense. The last upgrade was about four month ago, and there are many, me included waiting.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger,

RAW updates can come at any time and are not necessarily tied to either OS updates or software updates.

Guess what just dropped. RAW Compatibility Update 4.01 which includes the D600. No Fuji X-Pro 1 support however.

Maybe Aperture is not dead as in no longer being maintained (bug fixes, camera RAW updates, small features). Perhaps it is dead as in there won’t be a version 4 and no major Lightroom-parity features.

Robert,

That’s illogical. Would you include software (extensively!) in a multimillion dollar ad campaign and refer to it repeatedly in front of the press at a major product launch if you knew you were never going to update it again? I don’t think so.

I suppose they might update it again one day. Maybe in a year? Maybe in two? They “showed it off” at the 15” MacBook Pro retina announcement, too.

In the meantime their Pro users can use it on the new Mac Pros. Oh, wait!

I would also like to add that Apple has used the “pro” word recently in ads, Tuesday’s keynote, and by Tim Cook himself regarding the Mac Pro update in 2013. There’s been a lot of negative noise on the internet about Apple abandoning the pro market, and they now seem to be pretty aggressive in disputing that. If Aperture were going away, why would they keep referring to it as a “pro” solution?

Could be the reason for the delay is that they are coming out with a totally new version that will make the competition finally take notice, and that takes time. And the last thing Apple wants to do is a repeat of the FCP X fiasco.

Well, we can all hope for that, anyway.

What puzzles me is, in recent history Apple hasn’t been able to keep a secret very well for almost anything … even FCP was heavily rumored prior to the actual release … so far not even a hint about anything significant on a new version of Aperture …

On Amazon I found a link to a book on Aperture 4, to be released on 25 October :-)

There is still hope!

Martin … unfortunately that book has been listed by online publishers and booksellers for over a year now with progressively advanced publication dates … each date comes and goes with a new advanced date suggested … in fact it no longer shows up on Amazon US at all … I hope it could be correct this time … but it has not been a very reliable measuring stick thus far … :(
