iTunes not seeing my loaded Aperture library! No syncing! #1

This all worked fine before the latest update. Not sure if the update caused the issue but today I noticed all my sync photos were gone from my iPhone 4 and iPad. I checked in iTunes and when I chose to sync with Aperture it's showing 0 photos. The option to sync selected projects etc is greyed out. I can open Aperture and everything is there. I only have one Aperture library. If I chose to have iTunes sync with iPhoto 11, all is there and works fine. HELP! What's going on?

I have had the same issue. I’ve done a lot of things to try and fix the problem, but all things only temporarily solve the issue. It fixes it initial,y and syncs my selected album to my iDevice, but if I fool around in Aperture, eventually it all disappears again. I HAVe noticed that the iPod cache has disappeared on me without me doing so - I believe the pictures all disappear, leaving only the database file, and thus obviously breaking the sync at some point.

There’s only one thing I haven,t tried, and that’s regenerating previews. I’m holding off on that as it is a last resort for me, as it will take overnight at least for Me.

Interestingly, my photos remain viewable in other areas of my OS, or at least mail. It has disappeared from my Desktop in sy stem preferences however. This has happened a lo time ago for my iPhoto library as well, and i never resolved it. I did discover a workaround, though - for whatever reason, the libraries are accessible in the screensavers panel, so if you select the screen savers panel, then close system preferences and reopen, it will start on the screen saves panel by default. Wait until the library is accessed in the screen savers panel THEN switch to desktop panel, and your library will be accessible.

I am going to try trashing the desktop preference list though.

Mr. Kgoo,

The only thing that seems certain is that there is no certainty. As soon as one person is convinced they’ve found a reliable fix, someone else claims that doesn’t work for them.

Short of trying all the possible suggestions here, in the article I posted, and on the Apple support boards, I can’t offer any more advice. If you’re not able to find the fix that works, I’d go for the export-and-sync method until Apple gets it fixed. I don’t think it’s worth the headache.

Folks,

A solution has apparently been found (or rather, the root of the problem). Check the new post on the front page… Aperture Library Not Showing Up in iLife/Media Browser? Possible Solution Found…

Well, looks like Aperture 3.1.1 doesn’t fix this issue - the root being that my ApertureData.xml should (I assume) update whenever I make changes to my Aperture Library, except it doesn’t.

iTunes reads the ApertureData.xml file to look for changes when syncing, and since it doesn’t update, then changes to the Aperture Library to not propagate to iTunes (and any synced iDevices). I’ve noticed that when something does happen (at least under Aperture 3.1), and it tries to update the xml file, that xml file can become corrupted, leading to an empty xml file, and thus the next time you try to sync with it, it empties the iPod cache, and also your iDevice.

Perhaps the glitch causing the empty xml file has been fixed, but regardless, my xml file doesn’t update when I make changes to my library.

At the moment, it appears the only workaround is to rebuild the library to rebuild the xml. This, for me, takes 45 minutes to rebuild and then propagate the places metadata back. Annoying.

Of course, I guess I could use Joseph’s technique of bypassing the link to Aperture, but I lose a few things, such as Faces metadata and the order of the albums (which I assume will be alphabetical). I suppose it ends up being a toss-up between which thing I find the least inconvenient… but it shouldn’t have to be that way, right? Especially for software that costs like Aperture does…

I had a smiliar issue with my upgrade. Did Aperture crash or quit at any point while doing the upgrade? I resolved the issue by making sure all of my masters were online and then going to generate new previews. Once I had aperture remake or update the previews, everything showed up in iTunes and on my iPad again. Kind of a huge pain.

Folks,

I’m hearing this from a few places. So unless it’s the same person commenting, you’re not alone ;)

For sharing to work, both Previews and Sharing with iLife & iWork have to be enabled in the Aperture preferences. It sounds to me like this preference is stuck; corrupted somehow. Try trashing your preferences, and be sure to reset all prefs the way you want them. Toggle sharing off and on, maybe even quit the app between toggles. Basically kick start things.

Let me know how it goes please. Thanks.

For the record, trashing the Desktop preference did nothing.

Anyway, I think that the issue with iTunes is separate from the issue with the rest of the iLife media browser, because generally I have no issue with the media browser, except when to iTunes and thus syncing to my iDevices.

Something I HAVE noticed, however, is that I have some weird behaviour in my Aperture Library. As noted in many of the ‘fixes’ for the iLife Media Browser issue, one solution can be to remove the ApertureDatabaseTimeStamp file (in the iLifeShared folder). Now it’s a temporary fix, because Aperture is meant to recreate this file when a new version is made and you quit Aperture.

HOWEVER, I have noticed my version of Aperture does NOT create a new TimeStamp file. I’m not sure what I can do to make that happen. Right now, I imported a bunch of new pictures into a new project, and messed with them a bit, created new albums, etc. then quit Aperture. A new TimeStamp is NOT created. Even if I delete the TimeStamp file and open and close Aperture.

Now what is this TimeStamp file? I don’t know, but according to my Time Machine, this folder did not even exist before I installed Aperture 3.1, so I suspect it’s a new mechanism for sharing iLife media. It has no data, so I imagine it’s a way for recording when I make changes in Aperture. Since it is not updating, this is leading something else to think that I’ve made no changes in my Aperture Library. Possibly the ApertureData.xml, which has the same date of creation/modification as my TimeStamp file.

If these aren’t updated, could this be causing the issue of changes not propagating through to iTunes? And if so, thus leading to some corruption whereby the iPod cache is emptied, and thus no longer sync?

I have no idea - I’m just trying to piece together all my anecdotal experiences (changes in Aperture not showing in iTunes, iPad syncing zero photos, iPod Cache vanishing, TimeStamp and ApertureData.xml not updating, things mysteriously updating the next day, etc).

I’m going to check back tomorrow and see if those files update after midnight.

Mr Kgoo,

Unfortunately we’ve exhausted my ability to help on this one. We’re deep into engineering territory. One thing is for certain though—there’s a real problem, not an imagined one by a few random users. Without a doubt Apple is looking into this and hopefully will figure it out soon.

Well, thanks for your help, regardless. I think it’s amazing that we even have such resources such as this site and other forums. So many people can help and figure out the issue. I’ve learnt a lot about the inner workings of Aperture, which is still invaluable.

What I’m pleased with in particular is that the group of people who use Aperture are a very smart bunch, and there’s less floundering around and much more helpful info.

That said, I thought my TimeStamp file would be fixed today, but no luck. Aperture still refuses to update the TimeStamp and also the xml file, so no changes I made yesterday are showing through to iTunes. They do, however show up in mail, screensaver etc (although I did have to open Screensaver before Aperture even showed up in Mail).

What really sucks is that this has dampened my enthusiasm to even go shoot images. Too much time spent messing about with the ‘tools’. Of course, they’re just tools, right? We all survived before using these…

Mr Kgoo,

right… I hear ya. And that has inspired me to write a short post, which will be up momentarily, on how I do things. Because I’m not dealing with these problems—at all. I bypass the sharing entirely.

Sorry, I just misread the above post. I thought I left a comment on the new entry.

Anyway, nice post! I like the whole “sync to exported folders” idea. Might have to give it a go. Does it retain album structure?

Mr. Kgoo,

You can export images to a folder structure using Folder and Project names (as well as year, month, day, time, version and master file name and more), but not Album name. Check out the Aperture > Presets > Folder Naming… option.

Sorry, what I meant was does the iPad recognise each subfolder as a different album when viewed in the photos app?

Anyway, I’ve just gone into Aperture and added ONE photo (after several days of adding photos and nothing happening). Just for information’s sake, I had to adjust the time/metadata, so I did that, moved it into an existing project and folder and then quit.

Then, BOOM. TimeStamp updated, ApertureData.xml updated, and all the photos in the iPod Cache got deleted (leaving the folder structure and photodatabase file in there). Of course, when I plug my iPad into iTunes, it now shows NO photos in the Aperture Library, so if I sync it will delete them all.

I’m not sure exactly what is causing the Timestamp/ApertureData.xml to update, but it appears when it does, it kills the iPod Cache, thus leading to some sync error.

For the record, I can see the photos in the media browser in apps such as mail.

Of course, with no update, I’m still having the issue. I have played around with Joeseph’s workaround (export and sync), which does work really well, but I still would like to sync with Aperture directly (I lose faces and album ordering when I use that method).

At any rate, it seems clearer to me that the TimeStamp and ApertureData.xml are failing to update every time, but whenever it does (I’m not sure exactly when - sometimes it happens when I do something major, other times when I do something minor, and most times not at all), when I next connect my iPad to iTunes and look at the photos tab, it has a breakdown and deletes all the images in the iPod Photo Cache folder (leaving the folders and database file). A consequence of this is that the iPad/iTunes no longer sees ANY photos, thinking the Aperture library is empty (and making selected albums unavialable as an option to sync). THEN, if I choose to sync, it will, of course, trash all the photos from the iPad.

Go figure. My latest wipe prompted me to tr and resync. But to pit all my potos back on my iPad I need the aperture library to update the .XML an the timestamp file. Now, no matter what I do, nothing updates it. I just can’t figure out what causes thosefiles to update. All I know is when they do, I can sync. However, when I am synced with a proper iPod photo cache folder, and the time stamp updates (an the XML) then it kills the cage and breaks the sync.

I have noticed now, though, that the XML file, when the iPod cache is deleted, contains nxt to no information, including a zero photo count. I think it’s this bad XML file that makes iTunes think there are no photos in y aperture library. But how to regenerate it? Deleting it and doing a few things doesn’t work.
